In addition to the XPS One 27, Dell just unveiled a pair of Inspiron all-in-ones that will launch in the US in the coming weeks. First up, there's the One 23, the larger version of the two with more robust internals, and then there's the One 20, which has a 20-inch display and a more budget-friendly price.

Starting at $749, the Inspiron One 23 is available with either second- or third-generation Intel CPUs, ranging from a 3.3GHz Core i3-2120 processor at the entry level to a Core i7-3770s in top-of-the-line models. It comes standard with 500GB of storage, though that can be upped to 2TB. You can also add an AMD Radeon HD 7650A graphics card with 1GB of video memory, if the standard Intel HD 4000 graphics aren't going to cut it. The port selection is similar to what you'll find on the new XPS One 27: four USB 3.0, two USB 2.0 with power charge, audio out, VGA, mic and headphone jacks and a card reader (HDMI-in is optional). With the recent academic year now behind us, the focus for new graduates shifts towards the future. For many young people with newly minted degrees, this will be the time to go out into the world equipped with ambition and enthusiasm as they search for that first full time job and begin climbing the career ladder.

With recent discussions in the media centering around the challenge faced by many young people to find meaningful employment, the topic of building an arsenal of versatile life and career skills is an especially relevant one. How can the educational system best equip young people to meet these challenges?

Recently, I ran across an interesting article in Forbes online written by contributor Erica Swallow that explored the shift from the skills traditionally taught by America?s educational system towards a focus on innovation and entrepreneurship. The title of the article, ?Why America?s Educational System is Obsolete? is clearly meant to be provocative, but the article raises some interesting points.

Swallow references author Tony Wagner, who has written several books on the subject of new learning models, including ?The Global Achievement Gap: Why Even Our Best Schools Don?t Teach the New Survival Skills Our Children Need?and What We Can Do About It? and recently ?Creating Innovators: The Making of Young People Who Will Change The World.? Wagner was founder and co-director of the Change Leadership Group at the Harvard Graduate School of Education, and recently became the first Innovation Education Fellow at the?university?s Technology & Entrepreneurship Center.

Tony Wagner?s work explores the new realities of workforce competition in an increasingly global marketplace. He states that it?s not enough for schools to produce students who simply read and write, but to develop minds that care about what they?re reading and writing. Wagner advocates for skills that teach young people to become critical thinkers, strong communicators and?civically engaged citizens. His ideas have received accolades from both academics and legislators.

The Forbes article compared these ideas to the qualities typically promoted throughout the K-12 (and often post-secondary) educational experience. Students are often taught to compete with one another for grades rather than work in teams; to memorize information for standardized tests rather than develop and test hypotheses or analyze problems. Additionally, the classroom is often set up as a hierarchy, with the teacher as the gatekeeper of knowledge. In this environment, learning is often a passive experience rather than an engaging one.

The article?s author suggests that students instead be encouraged to become involved in hands-on learning?taking things apart, solving problems, asking questions, examining problems from new angles and working together?to become truly engaged in, and challenged by, the learning experience. Reasoning, analysis and problem solving, he argues, comprise the foundation for critical thinking.

This idea is not a new one, and has slowly been gaining traction over the last few years. The importance of critical thinking skills is discussed by numerous entrepreneurs, venture capitalists and progressive educators across the country (and the world, for that matter).

Facts and figures will always have a place inside the classroom, but a shift is taking place that requires educators to transition to a role of facilitator and guide for students as they travel along the educational path. This sets students up for success, not just for twelve plus years of K-12 and post-secondary education, but for an entire lifetime. Learning must also be an ongoing process in which people continuously seek new ideas and adapt to evolving technology. The economic prosperity of our future generations of graduates depends on it.

It's in the genes: Research pinpoints how plants know when to flower

Scientists believe they've pinpointed the last crucial piece of the 80-year-old puzzle of how plants "know" when to flower.

Determining the proper time to flower, important if a plant is to reproduce successfully, involves a sequence of molecular events, a plant's circadian clock and sunlight.

Understanding how flowering works in the simple plant used in this study ? Arabidopsis ? should lead to a better understanding of how the same genes work in more complex plants grown as crops such as rice, wheat and barley, according to Takato Imaizumi, a University of Washington assistant professor of biology and corresponding author of a paper in the May 25 issue of the journal Science.

"If we can regulate the timing of flowering, we might be able to increase crop yield by accelerating or delaying this. Knowing the mechanism gives us the tools to manipulate this," Imaizumi said. Along with food crops, the work might also lead to higher yields of plants grown for biofuels.

At specific times of year, flowering plants produce a protein known as FLOWERING LOCUS T in their leaves that induces flowering. Once this protein is made, it travels from the leaves to the shoot apex, a part of the plant where cells are undifferentiated, meaning they can either become leaves or flowers. At the shoot apex, this protein starts the molecular changes that send cells on the path to becoming flowers.

Changes in day length tell many organisms that the seasons are changing. It has long been known that plants use an internal time-keeping mechanism known as the circadian clock to measure changes in day length. Circadian clocks synchronize biological processes during 24-hour periods in people, animals, insects, plants and other organisms.

Imaizumi and the paper's co-authors investigated what's called the FKF1 protein, which they suspected was a key player in the mechanism by which plants recognize seasonal change and know when to flower. FKF1 protein is a photoreceptor, meaning it is activated by sunlight.

"The FKF1 photoreceptor protein we've been working on is expressed in the late afternoon every day, and is very tightly regulated by the plant's circadian clock," Imaizumi said. "When this protein is expressed during days that are short, this protein cannot be activated, as there is no daylight in the late afternoon. When this protein is expressed during a longer day, this photoreceptor makes use of the light and activates the flowering mechanisms involving FLOWERING LOCUS T. The circadian clock regulates the timing of the specific photoreceptor for flowering. That is how plants sense differences in day length."

This system keeps plants from flowering when it's a poor time to reproduce, such as the dead of winter when days are short and nights are long.

The new findings come from work with the plant Arabidopsis, a small plant in the mustard family that's often used in genetic research. They validate predictions from a mathematical model of the mechanism that causes Arabidopsis to flower that was developed by Andrew Millar, a University of Edinburgh professor of biology and co-author of the paper.

"Our mathematical model helped us to understand the operating principles of the plants' day-length sensor," Millar said. "Those principles will hold true in other plants, like rice, where the crop's day-length response is one of the factors that limits where farmers can obtain good harvests. It's that same day-length response that needs controlled lighting for laying chickens and fish farms, so it's just as important to understand this response in animals.

"The proteins involved in animals are not yet so well understood as they are in plants but we expect the same principles that we've learned from these studies to apply."

First lady's book: On growing seeds, healthy kids

WASHINGTON (AP) ? From the beginning, Michelle Obama's kitchen garden has been an overachiever, churning out more peppers, parsley and eggplant than expected, and generating interest that ? yes, really ? crosses oceans.

Now, the first lady has added a 271-page book to her gardening resume, and Americans can read all about the planting misses that came with the hits, get tips on gardening at home, and, Mrs. Obama hopes, draw some inspiration that just might change their lives. Oh, and if it happens to help her husband's re-election campaign, that would be nice, too.

Lofty goals for a book about a garden.

In "American Grown: The Story of the White House Kitchen Garden and Gardens Across America," Mrs. Obama holds out the raised vegetable beds on the South Lawn as "an expression of my hopes" for the nation's children. "Just as each seed we plant has the potential to become something extraordinary, so does every child," she writes.

The $30 book, released Tuesday by Crown Publishers, traces how a city kid from the South Side of Chicago who became a working mother and then a political spouse found herself fretting on that first planting day, March 20, 2009, about whether an L-shaped stretch of soil would prove fertile ground for a national conversation "about the food we eat, the lives we lead, and how all of that affects our children."

The book, which answers that question with a resounding yes, arrives just in time for her husband's re-election campaign.

And while the book is decidedly non-political, that fits perfectly with the Obama campaign's view that the first lady can do her husband a world of good simply by pushing the non-threatening causes such as healthy living that have made her a far more popular figure than the president himself. Mrs. Obama's favorability rating in the latest AP-GfK poll was 70 percent, compared with 58 percent for her husband.

The book's release comes with a flurry of media appearances. She's already been a TV frequent flyer to promote her "Let's Move" campaign to combat childhood obesity ? doing pushups with Ellen DeGeneres, playing tug-of-war with Jimmy Fallon in the White House and serving veggie pizza to Jay Leno. She says she gets asked about the garden wherever she goes, around the world.

The book is chock full of colorful, glossy photos of luscious-looking vegetables, complete with a cover picture in which the first lady's blouse seems to be color-coordinated with the eggplants in her bulging basket of produce. Bo, the popular family dog, gets plenty of cameo appearances. There are maps tracing the growth of the garden over the past three years, and stories about community gardens around the country. Even a how-to on creating a compost bin.

The book is divided into four sections marking the seasons, and includes a complement of recipes for each.

There are inside stories about planting travails that will ring true with any weekend gardener: pumpkins that wouldn't grow, cantaloupes that tasted blah, blackberry bushes that wouldn't play nice with the raspberry bushes and an invasion of cucumber beetles, among them. The first lady makes clear she's not the one doing most of the hoeing and weeding, crediting school kids, White House chefs and grounds crew and enthusiastic volunteers from all over the White House chain of command with providing lots of manpower.

And there are bits of historical trivia woven throughout: John Adams ordered up the first White House garden, but it was never harvested after he lost re-election. Thomas Jefferson was obsessed with trying to grow a four-foot-long cucumber. Heiress Rachel "Bunny" Mellon, at 101 now a figure in the John Edwards' corruption trial, helped redesign the Rose Garden for President John Kennedy.

There are also bits of personal history: Mrs. Obama's father worked as a boy on one of the vegetable trucks that would deliver produce to neighborhoods, and had a reputation for sneaking pieces of fruit. Her mother's family had a plot in a neighborhood victory garden on the corner of an alley, and the kids had to eat their vegetables or go to bed without supper.

It is a tradition for first ladies to use books to advance their causes. Hillary Clinton wrote the best-seller "It Takes a Village," about the importance of community in raising children; and Laura Bush collaborated with daughter Jenna on a picture book about a reluctant reader, with "Read All About It!"

This is Michelle Obama's first book. She got no advance payment, and plans to donate all her proceeds to the National Park Foundation for programs that promote gardening and healthy eating, and to help care for the White House garden.

Smashed Broad Bean Dip with Fresh Mint, Garlic, Manchego and ...

This is just a quick and easy recipe that I wanted to share with you because it is perfect for this time of year. When you can?t be bothered to cook anything complicated but want something fresh and delicious to munch on. This is it.

I found the recipe in a pile of newspaper and magazine clippings that The Washer Up?s dad, Jim had sent me from England. He cuts anything food and drink related out of the Sunday papers and saves them up to send over. It? s very handy for keeping up with what?s going on over there.

The original recipe used 500 grammes of podded broad beans, I didn?t have anywhere near that many so I have adjusted it to suit. It?s one of those things where you can taste it as you go and add more garlic, lemon or mint to your taste.?

If you have young broad?beans that are still very small and bright green you can use them raw. If not you can blanch the podded?beans for two minutes then squeeze the bright green peas out of the pale jade skins and you?re good to go. I know that squeezing broad beans may sound boring bit it?s actually quite a therapeutic thing to do sitting outside in the early evening sipping a glass of mint tea or even a Mojito. It?s worth it just to see that beautiful bright green paste when you?ve done.

Smashed Broad Bean & Mint?Dip

Serves 2-3 as a snack, vegetarian, gluten-free. Adapted from Eat Your Veg

Prep time 15 mins

• about 200 gr broad beans (podded weight)
• 1/2 clove garlic
• 1 tsp salt
• 5 mint leaves
• 2 tbsp olive oil (or more)
• 50 gr grated manchego (or pecorino/parmesan)
• a squeeze of fresh lemon juice
• bread to serve, toasted flatbread/baguette/ciabatta or wholemeal toast

Blanch the broad beans (unless very young, tiny & bright green) for two minutes in boiling salted water, drain and then squeeze the bright green peas out of the pale green cases.

In a mortar & pestle, crush the garlic and 1/2 tsp salt to a paste. Add the mint leaves and pound again to a paste. Add a handful of the broad beans and grind to a paste.?Add more beans and continue pounding until you get a slightly chunky textured puree.

Drizzle in the olive oil and mix well then add the cheese, lemon juice and season with salt?and black pepper. Taste and adjust lemon, mint salt as necessary. Serve on/with toasted bread and drizzle with a little more olive oil.

Sit back and enjoy this fresh and delicious seasonal treat, I?m off to?make some more, it?s addictive. Thanks Jim.

Microsoft talks more on Windows 8 apps in the background

A few days ago, Microsoft posted up a new entry in its Windows 8 app developer block on how Windows 8 Metro apps can be coded to perform tasks while still running in the background of the OS. This week, the company posted up a new entry in the blog that offers up two examples of how background running apps can still be productive.

One example discussed was allowing background apps to run and accomplish tasks while a Windows 8 device is plugged into a power outlet, rather than running on battery power. Microsoft said that Windows 8 app developers can put in this kind of feature using what is called a maintenance trigger. The post explains:

The maintenance trigger is available to everyone and your app doesn?t need to be on the lock screen. The advantage of using a maintenance trigger background task is that it is guaranteed to not interfere with the user?s activity and, runs only on AC power. So you don?t need to worry about excessive battery usage.

Some example code is put into the blog on how to code in this maintenance trigger.

Yet another example is offering to give app users a way to give Windows 8 apps permission to run in the background while also appearing on the lock screen. The blog states:

This is a natural fit because the lock screen is designed to provide users info about their apps without the need for them to unlock their Windows 8 device. This relationship is a two-way street: your app can use these types of background tasks only if it is on the lock screen and, likewise, your app can appear on the lock screen only if it requests to use these types of background tasks.

Apps that might be a good fit for lock screen permissions include email clients which can show a number of unread emails to the user. Again, the blog offers up some example code to developers to show how a background running email app can download new emails from a POP account every 15 minutes. The blog also goes into some detail about how background apps do still have some CPU and network resource usage constraints and goes over those specific limits.

Dark shadows on Mars: Scene from durable NASA rover

ScienceDaily (May 23, 2012) ? Like a tourist waiting for just the right lighting to snap a favorite shot during a stay at the Grand Canyon, NASA's Mars Exploration Rover Opportunity has used a low sun angle for a memorable view of a large Martian crater.

The resulting view catches a shadow of the rover in the foreground and the giant basin in the distance. Opportunity is perched on the western rim of Endeavour Crater looking eastward. The crater spans about 14 miles (22 kilometers) in diameter. Opportunity has been studying the edge of Endeavour Crater since arriving there in August 2011.

The scene is presented in false color to emphasize differences in materials such as dark dunes on the crater floor. This gives portions of the image an aqua tint.

Opportunity took most of the component images on March 9, 2012, while the solar-powered rover was spending several weeks at one location to preserve energy during the Martian winter. It has since resumed driving and is currently investigating a patch of windblown Martian dust near its winter haven.

Opportunity and its rover twin, Spirit, completed their three-month prime missions on Mars in April 2004. Both rovers continued for years of bonus, extended missions. Both have made important discoveries about wet environments on ancient Mars that may have been favorable for supporting microbial life. Spirit stopped communicating in 2010. Since landing in the Meridiani region of Mars in January 2004, Opportunity has driven 21.4 miles (34.4 kilometers).

NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory, a division of the California Institute of Technology, in Pasadena, manages the Mars Exploration Rover Project for NASA's Science Mission Directorate, Washington.

'Diablo 3' sales set record despite launch issues

The long-awaited launch of "Diablo 3" hasn't exactly gone off without a hitch, what with the launch-week?server problems and?the ongoing hacking claims. But that doesn't seem to have stopped eager gamers from snatching up the hack-n-slash, role-playing title?in record numbers.

According to Blizzard Entertainment, the game sold more than 3.5 million copies in its first 24 hours which makes it the fastest-selling PC game of all time. And that?number doesn't even include the more than 1.2 million players who received 'Diablo 3'?as part of signing up for a "World of Warcraft" promotion.?

Those first-day?sales figures beat the previous record holder (and another Blizzard game)?? "World of Warcraft: Cataclysm."?Meanwhile, "Diablo 3" sales ballooned to a whopping 6.3 million within the first week.

"We're definitely thrilled that so many people around the world were excited to pick up their copy of 'Diablo III'?and jump in the moment it went live," said Mike Morhaime, CEO and cofounder of Blizzard Entertainment, in a press release.

Alas, it was?all of those people jumping in at one time?that made it so many gamers were unable to play the title?they'd waited more than a decade for. Morhaime acknowledged that the launch had not exactly gone smoothly?... and (sort of)?apologized.

"We also regret that our preparations were not enough to ensure everyone had a seamless experience when they did so," he said. "I want to reaffirm our commitment to make sure the millions of 'Diablo III'?players out there have a great experience with the game moving forward, and I also want to thank them for their ongoing support."
