But in fact, it?s even better than that. The Pirates! In an Adventure with Scientists is an absolute treat from start to finish: daft, funny, clever and visually stunning.
The story begins in 1837 with the pirates, a hapless crew of buccaneers led by the equally hapless pirate captain. He is desperate to win the Pirate of the Year award but cannot seem to plunder a single doubloon.
Their blundering eventually leads them to board The Beagle, where they meet a nerdy young naturalist by the name of Charles Darwin. As the captain laments that he has plundered yet another ship with no treasure (unless you count a baboon?s kidney), Darwin notices that the pirates have something even more precious in their possession: a pet ?parrot?, Polly, that is actually a dodo.
Thus begins a rollicking tale of greed, double-crossing and slapstick adventure that leads The Pirates! into the heart of Victorian London?s science circles and beyond, all the way to Blood Island and the award ceremony for Pirate of the Year.
The Pirates! is instantly recognisable as an Aardman movie - director Peter Lord also made Chicken Run and Wallace & Gromit: The Curse of the Were-Rabbit - but by adding CGI and 3D to its trademark claymation technique the animators have upped the ante on their already astonishingly high standards.
Science and scientists are central to the plot, and as with all things Aardman the attention to detail is painstaking. Darwin really looks like Darwin and the movie is full of subtle references to his life and works; when The Pirates! gatecrash the Royal Society (motto: ?Playing God Since 1660?), it is accurately set at Somerset House on the Strand in London, where the Society was based for most of the 19th century. Michael Faraday and other luminaries of Victorian science make recognisable cameo appearances.
But you don?t need to know anything about science (except that dodos were extinct by 1837) to enjoy this movie. It?s brilliant - absolutely brilliant - family entertainment. My two sons, aged 9 and 11, have seen pretty much every animated movie ever made. They both thought this was the best yet.
And there?s more where that came from. The movie is an adaptation of a 2004 novel by Gideon Defoe, the first of a series of four Pirates! adventures. A sequel is already in the works. The scientists will be missed, but I for one can?t wait.

The it is acute myelogenous leukemia (AML), an aggressive form of cancer that Salesforce.com employee John Greene (aka JG) has been successfully fighting since last November. Salesforce.com is supporting JG as he defies his cancer, both in real life and on his blog, http://www.jgwkia.com. The company held a bone marrow drive earlier this year, and just kicked off their Light The Night fundraising team, which will walk beside JG at the San Francisco cancer walk on October 20th.
Salesforce.com recently held three kickoff events, one for each Salesforce.com building, to inspire employees to join the San Francisco fundraising walk, and to help JG reach his goal of raising $ 100K. JGs presentation, A Dream of a Life: A Brief Timeline of My Story, depicted JGs story from childhood to the present day.
Set to music, the show included photos of his major life events including his childhood; his wedding day; the birth of their first son Floyd, which coincided with the Phillies World Series win; the birth of their second son, Orion; JGs 40th birthday; and their fun family trip to Mexico. It also included a chronicle of his cancer journey the hair loss, treatments and hospital stays.
Attendees alternately laughed, welled up, and were inspired to take action by the end. Some Salesforce.com employees shared their own personal stories with JG following the presentation. One woman shared that her sister had gone through treatment as a young girl and the pictures of JG in treatment brought the whole experience back.
Some were inspired to carve themselves into groups to rally their respective departments to participate in Light The Night Walk. Sub-teams within departments have emerged, including a Giants fan group walking to support JG.
JG was diagnosed on November 8, 2010. Given the aggressive nature of his leukemia, treatment started three days later. By the end of December, JGs doctors at UCSF decided that he needed a bone marrow transplant.
The Salesforce.com team rallied around him, organizing a Be The Match Marrow Registry drive in January 2011 that yielded nearly 400 additions to the National Marrow Registry and even made the local news.
A match was found, and JGs day one with a new immune system was March 30, 2011. Today, just six months out from his transplant, his leukemia is in remission and hes back at work and inspiring other Salesforce.com workers to join him for the Light The Night Walk.
Participants in the San Francisco leukemia walk will gather in Union Square on Thursday, October 20th from 5:00 pm to 8:00 pm and walk for two miles. Participation builds team spirit, sense of camaraderie, and sends a strong signal that a company cares about the health and welfare of the community.
Light The Night is a great teambuilding event for companies. Other participating companies include Burson Marstellar, Marsh Risk & Insurance, Bare Escentuals, Silicon Valley Bank, Wells Fargo, Takeda, Umpqua Bank, and Genentech.

SAN DIEGO - Republicans want to make this week all about President Obama's signature health care law.
Mitt Romney begins his day at a medical device company in California, and his choice of venue is no accident. On the same day that the U.S. Supreme Court will hear arguments over whether to consider a challenge to the individual mandate, he will be talking about the need to repeal and replace "Obamacare."
Yesterday in Washington, Rick Santorum, used health care as a weapon against Romney, arguing that his rival's Massachusetts health care plan served as an inspiration for the Obama administration's version, which has become the leading symbol for Republicans of what they see as government overreach.
"Pick any other Republican in the country," Santorum said of Romney at South Hills Country Club in Franksville, Wisconsin. "He is the worst Republican in the country to put up against Barack Obama."
So far, Romney has managed to deflect such criticism, but with the issue of the constitutionality of health care front-and-center this week, Santorum is seeking to more forcefully tie his opponent to the Democratic-backed law. The former Pennsylvania senator plans to speak from the steps of the Supreme Court this afternoon.
But if Republicans want to frame contest in November around "Obamacare," and all it symbolizes, Democrats want to portray the Paul Ryan budget plan as a central example of GOP heartlessness.
In an interview yesterday on "This Week," President Obama's top strategist David Plouffe even went so far as to call it the "Romney-Ryan plan."
"If Mitt Romney's elected president, he'll rubber-stamp that budget," Plouffe said. "And here's what that budget is. It fails the standard - it fails the test of balance and fairness and shared responsibility."
And in advance of the vote in the House of Representatives on the Ryan plan, the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee has released a new web video titled, "Standing Up For Medicare," feature actor Martin Sheen protesting the GOP's "attempt to end Medicare and give tax cuts to millionaires and special interests." SUPREME COURT PRIMER. From ABC's Ariane de Vogue: On Monday the Supreme Court will hear arguments on whether it is premature for the Court to consider a challenge to the individual mandate, a key provision of the Affordable Care Act, that requires almost every individual to buy health insurance by 2014 or pay a ?penalty. At issue will be the Anti Injunction Act (AIA), a federal tax law that says, in essence, that a tax payer cannot challenge a tax, at a minimum, until it comes into effect. ?If the Supreme Court eventually rules that the individual mandate triggers the AIA, the court will have effectively punted the constitutional debate concerning the individual mandate down the road. It will have found that no challenge to the mandate can be brought until it goes into effect, which is after 2014. Obama gets personal over killing of black Florida teenager
WASHINGTON/SANFORD, Florida (Reuters) - President Barack Obama weighed into the controversial killing of a black teenager in Florida in very personal terms on Friday, comparing the boy to a son he doesn't have and calling for American "soul searching" over how the incident occurred.
Seventeen-year-old Trayvon Martin, dressed in a "hoodie" hooded sweatshirt, was shot dead a month ago in Sanford, Florida by a 28-year-old white Hispanic neighborhood watch volunteer who said he was acting in self-defense.
"If I had a son, he'd look like Trayvon," Obama said in his first comments about the shooting, acknowledging the racial element in the case.
"Obviously, this is a tragedy," Obama told reporters. "I can only imagine what these parents are going through.?And when I think about this boy, I think about my own kids."
The case has galvanized the nation and prompted rallies protesting the failure of police to arrest the shooter, George Zimmerman, and more broadly, a pattern of racial discrimination that black leaders cite in Sanford and elsewhere in the country.
Obama, the first black U.S. president, made his remarks at a White House event to announce his pick to lead the World Bank, waiting briefly after the announcement to take a reporter's question about the incident.
Martin's parents thanked the president for his words.
"The president's personal comments touched us deeply and made us wonder: If his son looked like Trayvon and wore a hoodie, would he be suspicious too?" they said in a statement.
Florida's "Stand Your Ground" law allows people to use deadly force in self-defense.
Similar laws are in effect in at least 24 states including Florida, according to the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence. Calls are mounting to repeal them. Earlier this week, a Florida state senator said he was drafting new legislation to drastically change the law in Florida.
A South Carolina state representative said on Friday he had introduced a bill to repeal his state's law.
RACIAL DIVIDES
Bakari Sellers, a black Democrat and gun owner, said he wanted to prevent an incident like the Trayvon Martin shooting happening in his state. "I'm six-five and a black guy," he said. "I just know that it could have been me."
Obama said the "Stand Your Ground" laws should be studied.
"I think all of us have to do some soul-searching to figure out how does something like this happen.?And that means that we examine the laws and the context for what happened, as well as the specifics of the incident," he said.
"Every parent in America should be able to understand why it is absolutely imperative that we investigate every aspect of this, and that everybody pulls together - federal, state and local - to figure out exactly how this tragedy happened."
Obama, the son of a white mother from Kansas and black father from Kenya, does not comment frequently on race, a sensitive topic in the United States, which still grapples with a legacy of slavery, segregation and discrimination.
Early in his White House tenure, Obama inflamed another racially tinged incident by declaring police had "acted stupidly" when arresting a well-known black documentary filmmaker, Henry Louis Gates, after an altercation at his home.
Obama later invited Gates and the white police officer, Sergeant James Crowley, to the White House, where the men shared a drink in what became known as the "beer summit."
In Sanford, Norton Bonaparte Jr., the city's manager, acknowledged tensions between the black community and police "go back many, many years." "The trust that existed is gone, so we have to start from ground zero," he said. Sanford's police chief and a Florida state prosecutor overseeing the case stepped aside on Thursday as criticism grew over police handling of the investigation.
The state's new special prosecutor, Angela Corey, arrived in Sanford after Gov. Rick Scott appointed her on Thursday night.
"We appreciate that an investigation was already done. We are going to review what was done. We are going to continue to investigate and then we'll proceed from there," Bernie de la Rionda, an assistant state attorney with Corey's team, told reporters outside the police department.
SUSPENSION, HISTORY
The U.S. Justice Department is also investigating. Senior officials from the department met with the Martin family in Florida on Thursday, along with their lawyer.
A Justice Department spokeswoman said early in the week that they must collect evidence to prove beyond a reasonable doubt that there was or was not intent to violate civil rights laws.
And a Florida college announced it had suspended Zimmerman's enrollment.
Zimmerman was working toward an associates degree in arts at Seminole State College in Sanford. He previously earned a vocational certificate in an insurance field, the school said. "Due to the highly charged and high-profile controversy involving this student, Seminole State has taken the unusual but necessary step this week to withdraw Mr. Zimmerman from enrollment," a statement dated Thursday said.
Zimmerman has not commented publicly about the shooting and his whereabouts are unknown. His father has said he is being unfairly vilified.
On Friday, Florida court records reviewed by Reuters showed Zimmerman was involved in at least two previous legal incidents, including a 2005 domestic violence case with his former fiancee.
Zimmerman, who at the time worked at an insurance agency, and his ex-fiance both sought restraining orders against each other after getting into a pushing match. In her complaint, Veronica Zuazo said the two had been involved in two physical fights in 2002 and 2003.
Zimmerman was also arrested and charged with resisting a law enforcement officer with violence in 2005. The case was eventually dropped after he completed a program to avoid being formally charged.

Chandler: Can Tebowmania, Linsanity coexist?
It was almost exactly a year ago that astronomers studying data from the Kepler telescope witnessed something never before seen: two planets sharing the same orbit around their star. The two planets are part of a four-planet system dubbed KOI-730, and they circle their sun every 9.8 days at exactly the same distance: kind of what it must look like watching Rex Ryan and his brother, Rob, circling the buffet at Golden Corral. But it also bolsters the widely-held theory that Earth once shared an orbit with another like-sized planet, and that the two collided ? a chunk of the pulverized loser becoming our moon.
Fast-forward to 2012 AD, where we find two other planets now in the same orbit. Jeremy Lin and Tim Tebow are more than just superstars ? they are celestial sports memes, with their own gravity, weather systems and jersey racks at Modell?s. And both are now in the same city, after Tebow was sent by the Broncos to the New York Jets for a few draft choices and a handful of magic beans. I wouldn?t toot my own horn even if I could, but I was one of the first to wonder, way back in early February, what would happen when the NBA season met the NFL season and Linsanity and Tebowmania overlapped. Solar storms? Fish raining from the sky? A silent movie winning the Oscar? The answer of course is, all of these. But little did I know that it would come six months early, and in the same city.
Of course only one will prevail: Tebowmania and Linsanity cannot co-exist indefinitely. But which will survive?
The paths that Lin and Tebow took to reach the Big Apple are remarkably similar. Both were undervalued when they arrived in the pros, but eventually proved their worthiness under fire. Both captured the imagination of a city, and then the nation and the world, with a combination of unexpected athleticism and aw-shucks naivete. Both elicit the same emotions you get when you see a dog driving a car ? it?s unexpected, it?s cute, and it?s proven darned useful for the dog?s owner. It?s like that episode of Cheers when Woody ran for city council and won. We love seeing wholesome over-achievers triumph.
The fact that both wear their religious beliefs on their sleeves helps a lot. Despite our cynicism, many of us still like to believe that God us up there working the levers. How else to explain that Broncos? win over the Steelers? And look, even though I coached Jeremy Lin in middle school, even I didn?t imagine him outscoring Kobe Bryant head-to-head.
But basic laws of nature tell us that one will eventually come out on top. There can be only one dominant playground bully, only one hottest-girl-in-school. We see it with wolves and Bighorn Sheep, gorillas and even the walrus: there can be only one alpha male. Eventually, Linsanity and Tebowmania will collide, and one will be smashed to bits and cast into deep space, perhaps a modest chunk remaining to become a colony for President Gingrich. But which one? Let?s look at the data.
Tim Tebow:
- Projected to be Mark Sachez?s backup, where he will presumably be used to run the Wildcat formation. And as we all know, that?s one step from becoming a tight end, or retirement.
- His new teammates are already throwing him under the bus.
- Things never end well for guys named Tim in New York. See: The Life and Times of Tim on HBO.
Jeremy Lin:
- Unlike Tebow, plays at a proficient level for four quarters.
- Has the important Spike Lee endorsement.
- Actually plays in New York.
- When he arrived in New York, had to survive on the mean streets of his brother?s couch.
- No Rex Ryan swearing at him day and night.
New York is populated with superstars, celebrities and national memes. Eli Manning and the New York Giants are the reining Super Bowl champs. A-Rod and Derek Jeter control their own Yankees fiefdoms. Woody Allen is a legendary inhabitant, sort of a Jewish Gandalf. And Donald Trump perches atop Trump tower, overseeing all like a gargoyle with a red combover. But the biggest of them all by far are the wonder twins, Lin and Tebow. They are the only ones big enough to have their own gravitational pull.
But I predict that a year from now, Tebow will be a distant memory, or a Jacksonville Jaguar. I?m not saying that New York will eat him alive, like some are maintaining ? as if we?ll soon be seeing Tebow exiting a cab with Lindsey Lohan, and weeping softly while sitting on a stool on Dr. Phil. He?ll remain his usual, chaste self. He?s not Gronkowski.
But I also don?t think that Tebowmania has the candlepower to shine with Linsanity when both are switched on in the same room. Tebow will fade a bit to the background, joining Eli, A-Rod, Jeter, and Gargoyle Trump. All are bonified New York celebrities, but there can only be one alpha male.
The only one officially on record in all of this so far is Lin. Washington Post:
If Lin, who said he?s only talked to Tebow once, feels challenged by Tebow?s arrival, he isn?t saying so. ?It?s awesome. I?m just excited for him and to see what he does,? Lin said. ?We?ll see what happens next year, but I?m excited obviously that he?s going to be in New York.?
In that same story, a reader poll rated Linsanity as more likely to prevail over Tebowmania, 72 percent to 28 percent. Much of that may be due to this being basketball season, and the fact that Tebow has not had a chance to prove himself.
Nor will he, in my opinion. Nothing against Tebow: he?s a fine lad, with a lot to offer. It?s just that there?s only room for one main protagonist in Gotham. And in time, that will play out.

What Is the Difference between Infusing and Dissolving?
Tea Party Science: How does a tea differ from a sugar-and-water mixture? Learn the difference between infusing and dissolving with this (mostly) delicious at-home activity.

Teacups, herbs, spices, hot water and a friend. Sounds like the ingredients for a fabulous tea party, right? But there is some serious science to be learned in the seemingly simple act of steeping and stirring sweeteners into water. For example, have you ever wondered why we add hot water instead of cold water to make tea?or to help sugar or salt dissolve? Take a deeper look into infusing and dissolving, a very important first step in many scientific procedures, with this fun?and tasty?activity.
Background
Heat releases the nutrients and essences of many things like herbs, flowers, seeds and spices. Water can also melt substances to the point that they disappear to the naked eye. The difference between the two is that when something is infused in water, it actually becomes a permanent part of it. When something is dissolved, it is still itself?only broken into smaller particles, which can be removed with other techniques (such as evaporation).
Materials
??? ?Five teacups
??? ?Three clear glasses
??? ?Five types of herbs, spices, seeds or edible flowers (we used nutmeg, cinnamon bark, red pepper flakes, clove flower and echinacea)
??? ?Boiling water
??? ?Tea strainer, tea ball or cheesecloth
??? ?Salt
??? ?Sugar
??? ?Agave nectar, maple syrup or honey
??? ?Notebook and pen
??? ?Friends
Preparation
??? ?Please observe heat safety precautions. An adult should assist with the boiling and dispensing of hot water.
??? ?You may want to prepare "tea" bags: Place each herb or spice into piece of cheesecloth and tie it tightly with string.
??? ?Set up your laboratory by assigning a spice, sweetener and salt to separate cups and bowls.
Procedure
??? ?Take three clear glasses and carefully fill them about one quarter full with hot water.
??? ?In one glass, spoon in your salt. What happens to the granules? Now stir your salted water until the granules disappear. How long does it take for the salt granules to disappear?
??? ?Repeat this process two more times, but use the sugar and the liquid sweetener you chose.
??? ?Does the color change? Does the odor change? You can record these changes with the pen and paper.
??? ?Have the adult pour the boiling water into the cups, over the strainers/tea bags.
??? ?Let them sit (steep) for two to five minutes. How do the colors change? How do the smells change?
??? ?What do your infusions taste like?
??? ?Extra: In water, when something is dissolved you can also reverse the process. If left out, the water will evaporate out of the solution, and the dissolved substance will settle at the bottom of the container or crystallize into a crust. Find a dry place where a cup will not be disturbed and leave one or more of the dissolved water solutions out until the water has evaporated.

NASA scientist's espionage attempt results in 13-year prison sentence
On Wednesday, Stewart Nozette, a high-profile former government scientist, was sentenced to 13 years for espionage after passing secrets to an FBI agent posing as an Israeli spy. He was also fined for tax evasion.
A high-profile former government scientist was sentenced Wednesday for attempted espionage, conspiracy to defraud the United States, and tax evasion.
Skip to next paragraphFormer NASA scientist, Stewart David Nozette, was sentenced to 13 years in prison. In addition, he is required to pay $217,000 to the government.
This penalty delivered by the US District Court for the District of Columbia includes two cases. Nozette pleaded guilty in September to providing classified information to a person he believed to be an Israeli intelligence officer, who was actually an FBI agent. He also pleaded guilty in January 2009 to fraud and tax charges.
?Stewart Nozette's greed exceeded his loyalty to our country? said Ronald C. Machen Jr., US Attorney for the District of Columbia, in a Department of Justice press release.
Nozette has a Ph.D. in planetary sciences from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and he helped to discover water ice on the south pole of the moon.
"He was a very solid scientist," Craig Covault, editor at large for SpaceFlightNow.com, told the Washington Times in Oct. 2009.
As early as 1989, Nozette held positions within the US government that garnered prestige and access to sensitive information. His positions included work with the White House on the National Space Council and at the US Department of Energy?s Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory.
But prestige wasn't enough for Nozette. Between January 2000 and February 2006, Nozette used his non-profit company, the Alliance for Competitive Technology (ACT) to commit tax fraud. With ACT, Nozette made $265,000 in fraudulent reimbursement claims. In addition, he intentionally evaded at least $200,000 in federal taxes, according to the Department of Justice.?
The tax issues led authorities to wonder whether Nozette was willing to compromise his high level security clearance. In September of 2009, an undercover FBI agent contacted Nozette, posing as an Israeli intelligence officer. In exchange for $10,000 in cash, Nozette provided the undercover agent with information relating to US satellites, communications and defense.
"I?ve sort of crossed the Rubicon,? Nozette told the agent, shortly before his arrest in October of 2009. Nozette has been in custody since then.
Neither the government of Israel nor anyone acting on its behalf has been accused of any wrongdoing in this case.
