Clive Shakespeare, the original guitarist and co-founding member of renowned 1970s Australian pop group Sherbet has passed away after losing his long battle with prostate cancer.
?
The saddening news was confirmed earlier today after reports emerged from family and friends that the guitarist had passed away last night [Feb 15] in an undisclosed hospital. He was sixty-two.
?
Born in Southampton, UK, and raised in Australia, Shakespeare first began making a name for himself around the local Sydney music scene as a guitarist and songwriter for several well-known bands at the time. In 1969 he along with vocalist Dennis Laughlin (who was later replaced by Daryl Braithwaite) formed Sherbet.
?
After releasing a string of hits, which launched them to the top of the Australian charts and broke them into the UK top 20, Sherbet became one of the most successful Australian bands of the 70s. In total, they released 17 albums, went platinum ten times and gold forty times. Sherbet was also the first Australian act to sell a million dollars worth of records domestically. Shakespeare was a huge part of the bands? success and co-wrote their 1975 No.1 song ?Summer Love,? as well as hits ?You?ve Got the Gun,? ?Cassandra,? ?Slipstream? and ?Silvery Moon.?
?
Shortly after the release of ?Summer Love? Shakespeare left Sherbet citing ?personal reasons? for doing so. Harvey James, who sadly passed away last year from lung cancer, replaced him. Shakespeare was scheduled to rejoin his former bandmates in a tribute concert to the fallen guitarist, but was forced to withdraw from the show due to health issues.
