Social Sciences - Essays in Finance and Development Economics
This dissertation consists of three essays at the intersection of finance and development economics. The first essay uses a framed field experiment in the Indian market for small-enterprise loans to explore the effect of organizational structure on bank lending. I show that the organizational structure of a banks lending model has important implications for the collection, transmission and use of borrower information. This affects risk-assessment and constrains the profitability of the banks lending. However, I show that simple incentive contracts, using performance pay to align interests at the different tiers of the banks corporate hierarchy, are effective in attenuating moral hazard, facilitating communication and improving the profitability of lending. The second essay, co-authored with Professor Shawn Cole, Harvard Business School and Leora Klapper, The World Bank, explores the impact of performance incentives on risk-assessment and lending. We analyze the underwriting process of small-business loans in an emerging market, comparing four commonly implemented incentive schemes. The results show strong and economically significant effects of performance pay on risk-assessment and lending decisions. High-powered incentives cause credit officers to exert greater screening effort, while making significantly more conservative lending decisions. We also find that deferring performance pay weakens the ability of high-powered incentives to induce effort. Finally, we document considerable heterogeneity in the behavioral response to performance incentives: experienced loan officers are significantly less responsive to incentives that reward lending volume over performance. The third essay explores the effect of debt relief on the financial position and economic decisions of beneficiary households, using a survey of 2,897 households affected by the Indian Debt Relief Program for Small and Marginal Farmers, one of the largest debt relief programs in history. Results show that debt relief does not improve investment or productivity, but leads to a strong and persistent shift in the composition of borrowing. I further document strong effects of debt relief on beliefs about the seniority of debt and the reputational consequences of default. These findings are consistent with the literature on personal bankruptcy and suggest that bailout programs are of limited use in addressing problems of debt-overhang, but have significant behavioral implications.

On the Scene: Archaeoacoustics: Tantalizing, but fantastical

VANCOUVER ? The field of archaeoacoustics wears the glossy sheen of charisma, a veneer that provides some protection against skeptics wielding the scientific method.
To be fair, the topic ? which might resonate with our inner Indiana Jones character ? is appealing: Scientists studying ancient ritual spaces like Stonehenge and Chav?n de Hu?ntar in the Peruvian Andes are using acoustics to divine some of the intention behind the ancient architecture. Results suggest that the structure of Stonehenge might mimic an auditory illusion. Hand clapping at the pyramid of Kukulkan in Chichen Itza, Mexico, produces an echo that sounds like the quetzal ? a sacred bird with mythical powers ? an otherworldly message that priests might have then ?interpreted.? Features within the Chav?n complex may have been designed to take advantage of the acoustic resonances of pututus, or ancient shell trumpets.
?This is an incredible finding because it suggests that the people who constructed this site built this architectural feature specifically to perform this function of transmitting a special sound from deep inside to outside,? says Miriam Kolar, a graduate student at Stanford University who is studying the relationship between pututus and the Chav?n architecture.
That charisma must be why, after a news briefing February 16 in Vancouver at the American Association for the Advancement of Science?s annual meeting, several news outlets chose to report these results.
But the problem is, there?s very little science to support what amounts to little more than a fanciful, convenient story, crafted from pieces that fit together nicely but have no solid backing.
?We need to stop thinking like scientists as we study these sites,? Steven Waller, an independent scholar, declared toward the end of the briefing. ?We need to realize what the ancient people would have thought of these things instead of thinking about what we know today. We have to forget those things so that we can, you know, see what it was like for them.?
Waller is studying Stonehenge. It?s his work that is attracting the bulk of media coverage so far ? stories that purport to cover a science meeting but have as their main character someone who suggests that his own work requires unscientific thinking. And it?s one thing to suggest that ancient people thought unscientifically ? but it?s another to interpret data unscientifically.
To be fair (again), Waller?s most recent abstract appeared back in October in the Journal of the Acoustical Society of America. There, he describes how the shape of Stonehenge mimics the pattern of positive and negative interference produced by two sources of sound, an auditory illusion that may have been imbued with otherworldly significance by a culture that didn?t understand the phenomenon?s physics.
Waller described how moving in a circle around, say, two pipers playing notes in a field, will take a listener through spaces where the sound is amplified and spaces where the sound waves collide out of phase and are muted. Loud, quiet, loud, quiet, and so on. When Waller asked blindfolded participants to do just this ? walk in a circle around two English flutes ? and draw what they thought might be producing the auditory effect, he reports that many of the images resembled Stonehenge?s structure, with large, bulky columns that block sound at certain intervals.
OK. I?ll admit, that?s interesting.
But then he concludes, ?Measurements of acoustic shadows radiating out from Stonehenge are consistent with the hypothesis that interference patterns served as blueprints for the design.?
How do we get from this experiment to ascribing intention to the construction of the Neolithic enigma? I?d say that conclusion requires several leaps of unsubstantiated logic. Waller claims to find support for his theory in local myths speaking of ?piper stones? and ?invisible towers of air,? but I?m unconvinced. The scientific method is missing. Where?s the hypothesis testing? Where?s the control experiment? Admittedly, control experiments are hard to do in archaeology.? But there?s been no rigorous evaluation of the claim behind the purpose of Stonehenge?s construction, something that ought to be acknowledged rather than explained away by additional mythology.
I wonder, will this field ever find satisfying, substantiated answers? I hope so. I find the studies fascinating, and would like to hear something I can believe.

Born in Southampton, UK, and raised in Australia, Shakespeare first began making a name for himself around the local Sydney music scene as a guitarist and songwriter for several well-known bands at the time. In 1969 he along with vocalist Dennis Laughlin (who was later replaced by Daryl Braithwaite) formed Sherbet.

After releasing a string of hits, which launched them to the top of the Australian charts and broke them into the UK top 20, Sherbet became one of the most successful Australian bands of the 70s. In total, they released 17 albums, went platinum ten times and gold forty times. Sherbet was also the first Australian act to sell a million dollars worth of records domestically. Shakespeare was a huge part of the bands? success and co-wrote their 1975 No.1 song ?Summer Love,? as well as hits ?You?ve Got the Gun,? ?Cassandra,? ?Slipstream? and ?Silvery Moon.?

Preventing the Tasmanian devil's downfall: Genome of contagious cancer sheds light on disease origin and spread
ScienceDaily (Feb. 16, 2012) ? Researchers have sequenced the genome of a contagious cancer that is threatening the Tasmanian devil, the world's largest carnivorous marsupial, with extinction. Cataloguing the mutations present in the cancer has led to clues about where the cancer came from and how it became contagious.
The research has revealed that the cancer, which is spread between animals by biting, first arose from the cells of a single female Tasmanian devil. This animal is nicknamed 'The Immortal Devil' because although she died more than 15 years ago, her DNA is living on in the contagious cancer cell line that she spawned. The cancer causes the appearance of tumours on the face of affected devils which grow rapidly and cause death within months.
"The Tasmanian devil cancer is the only cancer that is threatening an entire species with extinction," says Dr Elizabeth Murchison, lead author from the Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute. "Sequencing the genome of this cancer has allowed us to catalogue the mutations that caused this cancer to arise and to persist in the Tasmanian devil population."
The team found evidence for genetic differences between tumours, indicating that the cancer has genetically diverged during its spread through the Tasmanian devil population. They searched for these genetic differences between the tumours of 69 different devils from distant locations in Tasmania, allowing them to build up a map of the cancer's spread through the devil population. This indicates that some cancer sub-types may be more virulent than others.
"We found that devil cancer's genome has about 20,000 mutations. This is fewer mutations than are found in some human cancers and indicates that cancers do not need to be extremely unstable in order to become contagious." says Dr David Bentley, senior co-author from Illumina Cambridge Ltd. "Tracing the evolutionary history and spread of this cancer helps us to understand not only what caused this disease but also to predict how it might behave in the future."
The spread of cancer between individuals is normally prevented by the immune system, which can normally detect foreign tissues as 'non-self'. The team found some intriguing clues as to how the devil cancer may outwit the immune system, including mutations in a set of genes involved in immunity. However, future studies will be required to elucidate how cancer escapes the immune destruction.
"This research is important because it allows us to understand the pattern of disease spread and this may help contain the epidemic. However, we also now need to use the genome sequence to understand more about how this cancer became transmissible. Cancers that transmit through populations are obviously incredibly rare, but we should use the Tasmanian devil example to understand the process to be prepared in the extremely unlikely event that such an epidemic ever occurs in humans." says Professor Mike Stratton, senior author and Director of the Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute.
The next stage of the research will be to map the genomes of thousands of devil tumours in order to understand the genetic diversity present in the cancer and to investigate the genetic interactions between the cancer and the Tasmanian devil population.
