How To Identify A Great Company
Glassdoor, a jobs and career community, just released its fifth annual top 50 Best Places to Work list, with these five companies on top: Facebook, McKinsey & Company, Riverbed Technology, Bain & Company, and MD Anderson Cancer Center. But what makes a company a best place to work? And how can you determine if the company you think you want to work for is really a good employer...or not?
Consider these five tips when separating the "wheat from the chaff," so to speak:
1. How often do they seem to hire? A company adding additional staff because of an increased workload is hardly ever considered bad news. However, one that is always running an ad for the same position may need a bit more scrutiny. This often is a sign of high turnover rates and you don't want to be the next in a growing line of disgruntled ex-employees. The time spent trying to make things work at a company like this is time you could have spent securing employment with a reputable company.
2. Check its Better Business Bureau rating. Long seen as the go-to authority for customer service ratings, the BBB is still a great place to learn what people are saying about a company you may be interested in. Companies that care about their customers also tend to care about their employees. A company with a low rating may not only be hard to work for, but may also impede future success on the basis of your association with them. Be careful not to judge them based on one or two bad reviews. After all, some people simply cannot be pleased regardless of how well they're cared for. If, on the other hand, finding anyone to say anything at all positive is like the proverbial needle in a haystack, mark them off your list and move on. Plus, don't forget to check other sites, too, that offer what employees have to say. You can do so by Googling the company or checking a career site like Glassdoor and read the company's reviews and ratings.
3. Speak to current employees. Use caution here. Are you speaking to someone who has a vested interest in whether or not you choose to accept a position? A manager looking to replace a current staff member may paint a rosier picture in an attempt to have you apply. Whereas a current employee who may feel vulnerable about their position could see you as a potential replacement and choose to describe the company in less-than-flattering terms. If you're discerning and open-minded, you should have little trouble getting the information you need to make the best decision for you and your career's future.
4. Ask probing interview questions. Many potential employees believe they are the only ones being scrutinized during the interview process. Savvy applicants, however, use this time to do some scrutinizing of their own. Ask questions that help you understand why the position is open; i.e.; are they replacing someone, or is this a new position? If it's the former, inquire as to the circumstances that caused the vacancy. Ask the interviewer what current employees like about the company and what they would change. If the interviewer appears uncomfortable answering these questions, it may be a red flag telling you this is not a good place to land.
5. Visit as a customer. If you've ever had the displeasure of shopping a retail store full of obviously exacerbated clerks, you most likely formed a quick opinion of what working there must be like. Every company on the planet is open to sell something. You may have to be creative with certain types of businesses to achieve posing as a potential client, but the value of the information will be worth whatever pains may be necessary.
There are plenty of great companies looking for someone to round out their staff. Keep your eyes and ears open and get prepared to join the team when the right call comes in. Exercising prudence and listening to your gut when things just don't feel right will keep you from saying yes to the wrong position.

Storm stories: ?kicks us while we?re down?
Just as utility companies in the Northeast fixed power lines and some residents regained heat and electricity, another powerful storm rocked the New York area on Wednesday, sparking fears that the region could again plunge into darkness and freezing temperatures. Yahoo! News invited residents to share their short anecdotes and photos from the nor'easter. Here are some excerpts:
11:40 a.m.
New winter storm kicks us while we're down
MONROE TOWHSHIP, N.J.?This week's nor'easter began as a freezing rain. By the time it left the Northeast, it had dumped anywhere from several inches to more than a foot of snow, adding to the misery of those still without power from Hurricane Sandy.
Monroe Township, where this photo above was taken, received about six to eight inches. Some parts of New Jersey lost power again, after just getting back service after the hurricane.
But many people are still in the dark going into their second week. Gasoline is getting easier to find, which is a boon to those heating their homes with portable generators.
However, there have been several local fatalities from carbon monoxide poisoning from generators used with inadequate ventilation. Some residents in northern Jersey have been told it could take until early December before power is completely restored.
So many transformers have been destroyed that the power companies cannot get enough replacement parts. A forecast for warmer temperatures this weekend should make life a little less miserable for those affected.

Nor'easter disrupts Hurricane Sandy recovery efforts
QUEENS?One week we have a bad hurricane, and the next week we have snow.
The snow, combined with wind, has slowed down the utility repairs. A number of people in areas like Long Beach, Long Island, the Rockaways, and coastal areas of New Jersey are without power. Heavy snowfall such as this can cause branches to snap and fall on above ground power lines.
Normally, snow like this wouldn't be such a bad deal, but when you're dealing with big populations without light or power, it can be life-threatening. If the snow fall is bad enough, it may also slow the delivery of much-needed supplies.

Storm brings more snow, shivering commute to New York
MANHATTAN?In midtown on Wednesday night, people waited in the snow, shivering in the deepening cold for a bus while New Yorkers like me rushed to the subway to get home. The sidewalks were slippery, ankle-deep slush submerged parts of the streets, and the snow was sticking. Wet snow coated the debris left behind by Hurricane Sandy. A few door attendants shoveled snow from the sidewalks making a secure walkway for people.
After Hurricane Sandy battered the city last week, most New Yorkers felt they deserve a break from the crazy weather. Citizens who reside in lower Manhattan and in the storm-ravaged areas now had to suffer a setback in its Hurricane Sandy recovery efforts because of this storm.

Nor'easter bears down on storm-weary New York
BROOKLYN?The MTA is still in the process of recovering, with multiple lines still not running normally or at all. Many of my colleagues just returned to work on Monday after a week in which, at best, they were stranded in their homes without a working subway system or gas for their cars and, at worst, they lost those homes entirely. The city is pouring considerable resources into trying to get everything up and running, and another major storm certainly isn't welcome right now.
The idea of once again losing the service of the just-repaired subway lines that are running is not an appealing one?especially with temperatures continuing to drop. Therefore, I'm viewing the fluffy snowflakes currently falling outside my window with less than my usual delight.

Storm divides Northeast into two groups: haves and have-nots
DENVILLE, N.J.?There are two types in northern New Jersey right now during the nor'easter: the have and the have-nots. Those of us who have power are sheltering friends and family and doing our best to support our neighbors.
Many, however, refuse to take refuge in the homes of friends or family. They feel they would be an imposition or cannot bring pets. People who know better are freezing in their homes as a nor'easter dumps up to six inches of snow here in the New York-New Jersey region. Those who have power are hoping we don't have additional outages. It's very cold and there is a biting wind that is howling outside.
Snow is piling up here in Morris County and the roads are a mess. The schools already called for a 90-minute delay Thursday morning?after having missed so much school already. The lights have flickered and the trees look heavy with wet snow.

Sandy's aftermath in New Jersey makes nor'easter doubly hard
ESSEX COUNTY, N.J.?Hurricane Sandy hit us hard here in New Jersey, just west of Manhattan. We did not get a lot of rain from the storm, but the wind did us in.
Fast-forward to this week. Our building has no heat or hot water due to a power failure with the electric pumps that power the boiler. This is lovely for us, as we have been sitting in the cold for longer than one week. I have three children, a newborn, a 1-and-a-half-year old, and a 6-year-old so it has been a nightmare trying to use a small electric heater to heat a two-bedroom apartment. It makes you want to cry because your kids are cold and all you can do is give them blankets and dress them as warmly as possible.
School final reopened today, and many children in my son's kindergarten class were absent. Some people will not have power until Nov. 9 and tensions are flaring in those areas because of a winter storm that is occurring today. I have talked to a few residents about Sandy. Our friend's roof caved in after a large tree smashed into it. He still has no power and has two children who had to go to their grandma's in a neighboring county to stay because it is too cold for them to be without heat.
The debris clean-up has been slow. There is a lot of debris in our neighborhood such as broken glass, shingles, siding, toys, trash cans, garbage, and a lot of tree limbs. It will take a week of two before the area will return to normal again. Sandy hit the area hard but we will all bounce back soon.

Like a Hurricane Sandy encore
FREEHOLD, N.J.?I am writing this in the midst of yet another blackout. On Oct. 29, Hurricane Sandy hit my hometown of Freehold. That was only nine days ago. I was without power for an entire week.
Now, just four days after power was restored, I am sitting here in the dark again. A nor'easter is currently dumping snow on my neighborhood. There are six inches of snow on the ground, and it is still coming down. The snowstorm caused a transformer explosion, knocking out power on my block. Trees weakened by Hurricane Sandy are falling under the weight of snow. More and more of my neighbors are losing power by the minute. Fortunately, I still have gasoline leftover to run my generator. But I will have to buy more gasoline tomorrow.
Residents in Freehold were just getting back to normal when this nor'easter arrived tonight. People are relying on generators for power again. They are burning wood to stay warm. And tomorrow morning, they are going to need gasoline to run their snow blowers too.
Some of my neighbors rely on well water. But without power for the pumps, they have no water. For this reason, they left town during Hurricane Sandy. If power is out too long, they will have to leave Freehold again.

In Bo's old stronghold, fall blamed on Chinese elite intrigue
CHONGQING, China (Reuters) - China's campaign to bury fallen politician Bo Xilai under a litany of alleged misdeeds risks dragging down the ruling Communist Party's own standing among citizens who have already grown to assume that graft and abuse pervade it.
Bo is almost surely headed for trial and jail after the party leadership on Friday accused him of multiple offences dating back to his early years in government, including taking bribes, engaging in "improper sexual relations" and meddling in an inquiry into his wife's murder of a British man.
In Bo's former stronghold of Chongqing, a haze-draped, riverside metropolis in southwest China, over the weekend many residents greeted the news of Bo's spectacular fall and alleged crimes with sympathy or cynicism.
"Who knows if the charges against him are true - none of us were there. The government can say what it likes about him. The only truth we will ever know for sure is all the hard work he put into improving Chongqing," said Gao Zhigeng, a machinery factory worker on the cusp of retirement.
"Bo lost that game, that's all," said Gao, wearing an old-style Mao cap while he strolled past the luxury stores around the Liberation Monument in central Chongqing.
The Chinese Communist Party revealed the accusations against Bo at the same time that it announced a November 8 date for a congress that will bring in a new generation of top leaders - a line-up that Bo yearned to join.
Even with Bo gone, China's emerging leaders face the lingering belief among many citizens that some version of Bo's misdeeds is the rule, rather than the exception, of politics in this one-party state.
State media have tried to separate Bo from the party elite he once belonged to, calling his fall a victory that shows the party's determination to eradicate corruption. But on the streets of Chongqing, few people believed that message.
"What has happened to him is all because of infighting amongst a political elite - it's got nothing to do with anything else," said Liu Yunli, a 36-year-old worker in a logistics firm.
"Look at how developed we are here, and it's all because of Bo Xilai," he said, gesturing to a light railway line built while Bo was in power. "If there was some corruption then so what?"
Purging Bo will not free the government from suspicions that abuses are rife, even if not to the same extreme as Bo, wrote Beijing magazine editor Zhou Zhixing in a comment on the case.
"Bo is just a sample, and there are quite a few like him in officialdom," Zhou wrote for the "Consensus Net," a Chinese website for political debate. "The problem does not lie in personal defects, but in the system."
A POLITICAL GAME
Previously a commerce minister who favored sleek suits and expensive-looking ties, Bo arrived in Chongqing in 2007, and transformed himself into a combative advocate of populist welfare policies that appealed to many Chinese people as a cure to social divisions and discontent brought by unfettered growth.
Bo, 63, and his then police chief, Wang Lijun, also won nationwide admiration for an uncompromising crackdown on organized crime, which their critics said was a thinly veiled effort to purge enemies and confiscate wealth.
Bo's policies and brash self-promotion, however, stirred unease among some officials, including premier Wen Jiabao. A day before Bo's ousting in March, Wen accused him of flirting with the discredited ways of Mao Zedong's era.
Criticism of Bo was largely confined to the margins of political life until February of this year, when Wang fled into a United States consulate for over 24 hours, exposing allegations that Bo's wife, Gu Kailai, had in November murdered Neil Heywood, a British businessman who was once a friend, after a financial dispute.
In August, Gu was given a suspended death sentence, which effectively means a long jail term, after being found guilty of poisoning Heywood to death.
On September 24, former police chief Wang was sentenced to 15 years in jail for his crimes, including his defection and seeking to hush up the murder case that implicated Gu.
The latest party statement on the case said that in the murder scandal, Bo "abused his powers of office", a charge that appears to reflect accusations from Wang's trial suggesting Bo tried to stymie a police investigation. The government also accused Bo of taking huge bribes and other unspecified crimes.
Before Bo is charged and tried, investigators must complete an inquiry and decide to indict him. China's prosecutors and courts come under party control, and are most unlikely to challenge the accusations already leveled.
Still, in Chongqing, some said the inevitable guilty verdict against Bo was about politics, not justice for Heywood.
"They're only picking on him as he was too good at his job and too good at being a politician, and that made people in Beijing jealous," said Yang Chun, who works in a Chongqing nightclub. "It's all about politics. He did much for Chongqing and we are very grateful."
